dc.description.abstract | This study examines the use of the English demonstratives this and that by analyzing spoken corpus data. Despite the simple lexical meanings of the demonstratives, many second language (L2) learners of English have difficulty choosing appropriate forms due to different referential systems in English and their first language (L1). This paper first explains traditional proximal/distal distinctions of English demonstratives and then presents the Givenness Hierarchy (Gundel et al. 1993) and the gradient FOCUS model (Strauss 1993, 2002). Adopting a corpus-based analysis, this study suggests that practical, realistic examples help L2 learners to acquire the proper use of target language forms. | |
