Abstract

Work in crustacean cytogenetics was fairly popular before 1960, apparent by a considerable amount of reports of species numbers, dating from as early as 1885 when Carnoy reported the haploid chromosome number of the shrimp, Cragnon cataphractus, to be between 40 and 44 (Makino, 1951). Since 1960, however, there has been a shortage of published literature on the chromosomes of crustaceans. Consequently, the methodology for obtaining and examining the chromosomes of crustaceans has not kept pace with the development of cytological techniques for cytogenetic analysis applied to vertebrates, mollusks or even their fellow arthropods, the insects.
