dc.description.abstract The flood-tide jet entering Fanning Island Lagoon is described and is shown to be effective in promoting exchange between lagoon and ocean water. The residence time of lagoon water must thus be substantially less than the maximum of 11 months suggested by earlier studies. The bathymetry of the lagoon area subject to the jet is described.
