Abstract
Man's interest in space travel can be traced back to the second century AD when Lucian, the first "science fiction" writer wrote of a trip to the moon. Up until 1898, most science fiction involved man and his effects on space. Then in 1989, E G Wells in his classic "War of the Worlds" described the effects of earth microogranisms on life from outer space, hence the idea that interplantery encounters might involve hostile life forms.
