Abstract

Particle-size utilization in the deposit-feeding polychaete Neanthes succinea was examined. Gut analysis revealed that worms in San Francisco Bay consumed a broad range of particle sizes (20-300mm diameter). Gut sediment closely resembled size of surface sediment at the mouths of worm burrows . indicating non-selective feeding. All size classes of worms consumed similar sized particles. The flexibility in feeding modes and diet of nereids is discussed.
