| dc.description.abstract | While literary scholarship in the field of comic books and graphic novels has been attempted more and more of late, the application of traditional literary analysis methodologies prevents this analysis from going far enough. By researching the various forms of scholarship in relation to the superhero comic book genre, I have created an amalgamation of current scholarship to create a new, holistic model for the analysis of the superhero comic book. This new theoretical approach blends theories on comic book art, character analysis, narrative devices, and intertextuality into a single approach to literary analysis that highlights the unique characteristics of the comic book as a popular culture art medium. Using this model, Ars Comica then applies these techniques to the first six issues of the 1999 Wildstorm series, Planetary, in order to give current scholars a working example of how a more comprehensive look at comic books helps to fully actualize the potential for analysis in this field. | |
