Kenneth Katsunori Segawa was born in Honolulu, Oʻahu in 1948. Born to Herbert Segawa and Helen Nakai, Kenneth grew up with one older sister and two younger brothers in Wahiawā. Kenneth spent his childhood at school, playing with friends and family, working on the pineapple plantation, and in the water. He attended Leilehua Intermediate, Wahiawā Intermediate School—hosted in the Wahiawā Hongwanji Japanese School—and Leilehua High School. After graduating, Kenneth joined the Navy for four years and then returned home to pursue a degree in Education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
