Abstract
Description
Francis Gilman Kaʻoaʻo Forsythe was born on July 28, 1936 at Kahuku Hospital on the island of Oʻahu to Elizabeth Kahakulani Gilman of Waialua, Oʻahu and Adam Kaʻoaʻo Forsythe of Lāʻie Oʻahu. He is the youngest of five children; two brothers, Edward and Byron; and two sisters, Luahiwa and Maile. Francis grew up with his immediate family on Paʻalaʻa Road in Waialua. Through his mother, Francis is a descendant of the Gilman family who have resided in Waialua since his great-grandaunt, Kahanawale Kauʻi purchased land in the district, much of which was used for raising pigs.
Francis attended Waialua Elementary, Waialua Middle School, and Waialua High School until he was admitted to the Kamehameha School for Boys where he boarded until graduating. He then attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he majored in accounting and minored in Japanese. After completing his undergraduate studies in 1958, Francis moved to Japan for two years in fulfillment of his mission as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints before returning to live in his family home on Paʻalaʻa Road. He spent thirty-one years with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific Division in various administrative positions.
Francis lived a fulfilled life rooted in his faith and interest in culture and the arts, both Hawaiian and foreign. Along with these passions, he was a devoted church member, skilled genealogist, and talented pianist. Francis was known as an active, loving friend, brother, uncle, and great-granduncle, and he passed away on October 5, 2020.
