dc.description.abstractIn Reid (1989) I discussed two previously undescribed Negrito languages, Northern and Southern Alta, on which I had gathered data during fieldwork in the summer of 1987. During the same field trip I was also able to gather data from a group of Negritos in Quirino Province, who call themselves Arta. This paper will discuss the position of Arta with reference to the other languages of Northern Luzon. It will conclude that this previously undescribed language either constitutes a very early sister language of Ilokano, or else it is an isolate among the Cordilleran languages of the Northern Philippines. It will be shown to have been strongly influenced in relatively recent times by one of the Northern Cordilleran languages of the Cagayan River Valley.
