Abstract
Hawaii Mainichi (http://evols.library.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10524/47844) was a Japanese vernacular paper with a circulation of 7,000 published daily except Sunday in Hilo from 1912 to 1941. The only Japanese language daily on the Island of Hawai'i during the 1920s; printed in Japanese & English 1930-1941. Publishers/Editors: Jiro Hayakawa (1875-1916, founder), Nobuji Tokushiro (1880-[?], described by some as an "assimilationist" and "Hilo's greatest Issei of pre-WWI era"), Genichi Okubo (1886-1958, author of Hawai Nihonjin hatten meikan: Bochoban [Chronicle of the Growth of the Japanese in Hawaii], 1940), Sanji Abe (1895–1982, Hilo Deputy Sheriff, Hawaii Territorial Senator). During the 1930s editor Tokushiro may have expressed sympathy with Imperial Japan. The U.S. military shut the paper down on Dec 7, 1941 and Tokushiro was incarcerated.
Of over 8,800 issues published, only 240 (< 3%) are known to exist. Researchers could only access them by visiting the State Archives building. The pages are brittle and the paper is deterioriating. Scanning was requested by a distinguished patron of the Hawaiian/Pacific collection. Digitizing will allow for local and global access. The Challenge: English and Japanese language characters. Each page scanned at 300dpi grayscale, Saved as TIFF, then OCR'd using Abbyy Finereader, then saved as PDF.
