Abstract
Professor Mari Yoshihara (UHM American Studies) will discuss her new book, Dearest Lenny, which interweaves an account of Leonard Bernstein’s transformation from an American icon into a world maestro with an intimate story of his relationships with two unknown Japanese individuals seen through personal correspondence. The book is at once a story of love, a history of postwar U.S.-Japan relations, a study of the political economy of the arts, and an analysis of how personal relationships are both shaped by and transcend world affairs. Professor Christine Yano (UHM Anthropology) will lead the conversation about the book’s key themes and findings as well as the research and writing process.
