Description

A former University of Hawaii president details his family background and his education at Phillips Academy, Princeton, and Oxford University (the latter on a Rhodes scholarship). He covers his work with the Senate Civil Liberties Committee, Farm Security Administration, Board of Economic Welfare (in occupied Italy), United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, China Aid and Far Eastern programs in the Economic Cooperation Agency, Mutual Security Agency (overseeing the Marshall Plan), The Reporter magazine, NATO (as U.S. ambassador), and Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He talks about his UH tenure, including support for marine sciences, astronomy, and Korean studies; open admissions policy for community colleges; university budget; relationships with the Board of Regents, Governor John Burns, legislature, and newspapers; student activism during the Vietnam War; New College; Caucasian versus local issues; and faculty unionization.
