Abstract

This initial workshop in the East-West Center Mega-Regionalism — New Challenges for Trade and Innovation (MCTI) workshop series focuses on emerging trends in Megaregional Trade Agreements, like the Transpacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, and their impact on innovation. The workshop brings together trade economists with experts on innovation, intellectual property rights, competition law, technical standards, and industrial development. Speakers come from the US, Asia and Europe. Dieter Ernst, EWC senior fellow and Michael Plummer, director of SAIS Europe, Johns Hopkins University are co-coordinators of this activity. Participation in this activity is by invitation only. To create maximum space for multi-disciplinary discussion, each workshop is structured around invited Think Pieces which highlight important under-researched topics, and which lay out possible agendas for policy-related research. Revised versions of these essays will be made available after each workshop, creating a continuous stream of policy-relevant research findings to key audiences in the United States and across Asia. The MCTI workshop series will continue to meet once or twice per year, dividing these meetings between the East-West Center and partner institutions in the US, Asia, and Europe
