dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this project is to assist the English Language Institute (ELI) to find out about the writing needs of students and to offer recommendations so that that intermediate writing classes can meet those needs. The writing samples were from seven students who currently enrolled in an intermediate writing course. Samples were composed of their placement test and regular assignments for the course. Six traits — content, organization, grammar, word use, punctuation, and mechanics — were analyzed to identify students’ writing needs. Learners seemed to have difficulties in all six traits in general, suggesting that holistic approach should be taken. Pedagogical implications are presented in the framework of a process approach, which is currently employed to teach ELI writing courses.
