Abstract
Over 95 percent of Canada's domestic production of tuna is canned. There is only one major producer of canned tuna in Canada (Star-Kist) and production figures are confidential. Furthermore, at least 95 percent of the country's domestic tuna consumption is in the form of canned tuna. Moreover, almost all of Canada's tuna consumption is dependent on imported supplies, either in the form of raw fish for domestic processing or canned product. Import statistics are therefore used to provide a reasonably accurate description of Canada's tuna market.
