Abstract
Description
Roland “Lolana” Kahunaʻāina Medeiros lives in Honokua, South Kona, Hawaiʻi. In this interview, he speaks of his parents, Clarence Arthur and Pansy Wiwoʻole (Hua) Medeiros, and their influence on him. Clarence was one of the original persons to work for the Puʻuhonua National Park as a wood carver, a structure and stone wall builder. Lolana is currently employed at Puʻuhonua National Park in Resource management and his parents inspired his passions of farming and wood carving too. Lolana was in the Air Force and stationed overseas. He received his educational degree on Oʻahu and then returned home to South Kona to help his parents with their taro business. Lolana helped grow the business and had various other professions. He also shares his insights on the practices of ʻōpelu fishing and the types of boats used in Hōnaunau, Nāpōʻopoʻo, Keʻei and Miloliʻi. Lolana discusses his love for the ʻāina, his long-term goals as kālai kiʻi for Puʻuhonua National Park and sustaining the legacy of his ʻohana in Honokua.
