Professor Emerita of the Social Anthropology of Japan at Oxford Brookes University and founder of the Japan Anthropology Workshop and the Europe Japan Research Centre. Her books include the textbook Understanding Japanese Society and a collection of her articles entitled An Anthropological Lifetime in Japan. Her most recent book is a personal account of some of that lifetime, An Affair with a Village. In 2017, the Government of Japan bestowed on her the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
