dc.descriptionDorothy Ellen Kanani (Mathias) Awai was born on Maui in 1932 and boarded at Kamehameha Schools from the seventh grade. She met and married James “Jimmy” Awai, Jr. of Honolulu and they moved their family to Waialua in 1958 and quickly became a staple within the community through music, hula and being the "unofficial" preschool and part-time caregiver for the working parents in her neighborhood.
