dc.description.abstract The initiating reaction of the hexose monophosphate shunt (HMP shunt, phosphogluconate pathway, pentose phosphate pathway) is catalyzed by the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD; D-glucose-6-phosphate:NADP 1-exidoredctase). In this reaction, glucose-6-phosphate is oxidized to 6-phosphogluconolactone with the direct transfer of two electrons from glucose-6-phosphate to the nicrotinamide ring of oxidized nicronamide adenin dinucleaotide phosphate (NADP).
