dc.description.abstract At the beginning of Measure for Measure, the Duke gives Escalus a commission conferring governmental authority on Escalus in the duke's absense. The Duke does not feel that he needs to advise Escalus as to how he should carry out his duties since Escalus's own knowledge of government, "Exceeds... the lists of all advice" that the Duke can give him.
