D. cucurbitae has been reported from southern China, Formosa, Okinawa, the Philippines, Malaya, Burma, India, Ceylon, Mauritis Island, Kenya Colony in East Africa, Guam and Hawaii. The fly mainly attacks the crops of watermelon, cantaloupe, pumpkin, squash, cucumber, tomato, peppers and beans. In Hawaii, the fly also attacks crops of passion fruit.
