Writing what amounts to a guest editorial of sorts, Honolulu resident W. L. Bishop Jr. in 1887 provides a wide-ranging treatise on Pacific geopolitics during a time when Hawai‘i’s relations with Sāmoa, with which the Hawaiian Kingdom had just signed a treaty of confederation and where it was dispatching the Hawaiian navy ship Kaimiloa, were hotly debated in the Hawaiian press.7 pagesReprint
