Scholarspace. Sep. 2015. Web.http://hdl.handle.net/10125/38066This item includes a segment of a student interview in a Writing Intensive course in Geography at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The interview was conducted in 2015, and in this clip the interviewee is responding to the question 'What elements of your writing performances would you identify as strong or successful, and why? What defines success for you? What do you think determines success for this instructor?'Brief excerpt from interview: I tend to be a detailed-oriented person, so I think that helps [with my] writing in terms of unpacking the nuances of certain things. Especially when I'm doing critical analysis, a lot of times it's maybe this really broad concept that you find challenging, [or] it also can be a broad concept and that's important to challenge... I think sometimes there's certain things in articles that you'll read and [a few points] will kind of not resonate with you, and so I think critiquing [those areas] would be a strength... I think I'm pretty good at [summaries], but I think some of the like critiquing stuff is a new skill, so I'm still kind of working on that... I feel like you can't do a critical analysis unless you critically read because... [if] you take everything [in textbooks] as fact, then you can't critically analyze it, because... you won't challenge it even if you have your own objections to it.Duration: 00:02:57Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 United Statesplace-based writingwriting across the curriculumwriting in the disciplinesWriting Intensive coursesscholarship of teaching and learningwriting pedagogygeneral education requirementsidentitychallenge/solutionkind of learningeducational contextcritical analysisstudent perspectivesacademic writingsuccessresearchconcepttopicssummaryskills developmentscholarly articlesStudent interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 5 of 11Interview
