Born to Herbert Segawa and Helen Nakai, Kenneth grew up with one older sister and two younger brothers in Wahiawā. Kenneth spent his childhood at school, playing with friends and family, working on the pineapple plantation, and in the water. He attended Leilehua Intermediate, Wahiawā Intermediate School—hosted in the Wahiawā Hongwanji Japanese School—and Leilehua High School.
