LJ1-001.txt ReadMe Document for LJ1-001 item Teen Language and Identity--Analysis of Western Vowel System features in the speech of Pacific Islander and Euro American Teens in Utah LJ1-001-A.zip This .zip file includes .csv files with data related to the study. -TLI1_Participants--includes speaker ID, high school, birth year, gender, and ethnicity (E = Euro American, P = Pacific Islander) for 77 teen English speakers -TLI1_Vowels--includes the following data for selected vowel tokens before obstruents (excluding postcoronal GOOSE and prevelar TRAP): -speaker ID -filename -word -vowel category (in ARPAbet) -rating (based on recording quality; 1-3, with 1 being best) -previous phone (in ARPAbet) -next phone (in ARPAbet) -normalized (ANAE method) F1 at midpoint -normalized (ANAE method) F2 at midpoint -participant's high school -participant's birth year -participant's gender -participant's ethnicity (E = Euro American, P = Pacific Islander) LJ1-001-B.zip -This .zip file includes 4,626 .wav files (2 seconds long) with corresponding .TextGrid transcription files for individual word recordings. -Each recording shares a filename with its corresponding transcription. (Only the extensions differ.) -Filenames follow this template: -###_WORD_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS -The first three characters are the speaker ID#. IDs beginning with 1 indicate that the participant is from Valley View High School (pseudonym). IDs beginning with 2, 3, or 4 indicate that the participant is from Lakeside High School (pseudonym). -The next section is the word the participant was asked to read. -The next two sections indicate the date (YYYYMMDD) and time (HHMMSS) of the recording. -Sound files were recorded at 44.1 kHz/16 bit using a Zoom H4n Handy recorder (connected to a Surface Pro 4 or Surface Pro 5 PC tablet) and an Audio-Technica AT831B cardioid condenser lavalier microphone. -TextGrid transcription files were force-aligned using Montreal Forced Aligner and a modified Librispeech pronunciation dictionary. -The recordings in this collection include selected words with vowels before obstruents. -Participants were recorded at their high schools, generally after school. Recording locations included classrooms, computer labs, conference room, library, etc.
