Abstract

The extracellular space in between cells, or extracellular matrix (ECM), is essential for the function of cells and tissues in the body. These functions include the ability to support cell growth and differentiation into specialized tissues. The destruction of certain ECM structures is associated with the transformation of cells in various forms of carcinomas including breast and lung cancer. Lysyl oxidase (LOX) is an enzyme that is important for the development and maintenance of the ECM. LOX catalyzes the cross-linking of collagen and elastin, two major proteins that form a fibrillar network in the ECM.
