Abstract
Previous research has shown that pronunciation instruction is facilitative to various aspects of a language learner’s second language (L2) speech development, but intervention was often conducted at a whole-classroom level. This case study examined the effects of one-on-one pronunciation instruction via tutoring with a Japanese learner of English studying at an American university. Over the course of five weeks, the participant received 7.5 hours of online instruction with the tutor on the target English-specific segments: /l/, /ɹ/, /f/, /v/, /æ/, and /ɛ/. Five native and five non-native English-speaking listeners evaluated the intelligibility, comprehensibility, and perceived foreign accent of the participant’s English oral production. Descriptive analyses reveal that the participant demonstrated short-term intelligibility gains, but no immediate gains in comprehensibility nor accentedness. These findings offer several pedagogical implications for one-on-one pronunciation instruction.
