dc.description.abstractThis project seeks to address issues facing small organic sweet potato growers in Hawai'i through developing varieties descended from the traditional Hawaiian germplasm. The Hawaiian germplasm being part of the Polynesian germplasm and relatively unexplored without crossing into other sweet potato lineages in breeding programs. Twelve breeding lines from an open-pollinated poly-cross block of traditional Hawaiian varieties are compared to the regional commercial standard, and three traditional Hawaiian cultivars of interest. Ten Agronomic and biochemical traits such as yield, sucrose content, and different pest and physical damage metrics are used to assess the commercial viability of these breeding lines. These lines were planted in three variety trials in two different locations on Oahu over different planting seasons for three environmental combinations. Two breeding lines were identified for further trialing after showing commercial potential. The unique physical characteristics of some of the breeding lines may be desirable in further work or other niche markets. The intent is that with collaboration with an indigenous-led organization, small scale organic growers can achieve a price premium catering to local market preferences. This price premium may allow more small organic growers to make a return on investment and stabilize or increase sweet potato production in Hawai'i.
