Abstract
Educators, i.e., classroom teachers, have traditionally assumed that all students possess the same entry level and have thus proceeded to set up the same expectations for all. The criterion of success is the same for all. All students must achieve the same objectives using the same instructional materials (usually textbooks), following the same procedures, and spending the same amount of time on the same areas of study. Teachers treat their students as if they were all equal in intelligence, achievement, readiness and interest. Yet no two persons are alike. Their hopes, fears, aspirations, and family histories are all different. The teacher’s role should essentially be of helping each student to reach his potential. Too many students waste their time sitting in classrooms looking at textbooks they do not understand or do not find relevant to their needs; following a curriculum that has been developed "higher up " and far away; having their differing degrees of interest, ability and energy ignored.
