dc.description.abstractIn the fall of 1993 and the spring of 1994, the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Department of Theatre and Dance, in conjunction with the University of Hawai'i Center for Chinese studies and the Jiangsu Province Beijing Opera Company of Nanjing, People's Republic of China, produced the first model revolutionary Beijing opera to be staged outside of mainland China. The opera, Shajiabang: Spark Amid the Reeds, was first created during China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.
