Observations that the fundamental metabolic activities of most organisms are very similar are associated with the finding that enzymes catalyzing identical reactions may be found in many different organisms and different tissues within organisms (Markert and Mo1ler, 1959). Modifications in these metabolic activities at the organismal, or tissue level, however, may greatly alter the relative importance of individual metabolic reactions and their enzyme catalysts.
