Abstract

Concussions are prevalent among student athletes, yet parental education on recognizing concussion danger signs remains inadequate. This project aimed to address this gap by providing evidence-based concussion education to parents of student athletes. The goal was to enhance parental knowledge of red flag concussion symptoms and prompt appropriate action, ultimately improving outcomes for student athletes. To guide this project, the Interactive Systems Framework for Dissemination and Implementation was used. This project synthesized existing literature and collaborated with a pediatric office to disseminate concussion education. Materials were housed in a Google Drive, accessible via a QR code on infographics and flyers. Pre- and post-education assessments, a short, pre-recorded educational video, and an additional link to free concussion resources were provided. The effectiveness of the intervention was evaluated with pre- and post-educational assessments. Results indicate improvement from pre- to post- education assessment scores in those completing both. A total of eight pre-education assessments, and five post-education assessments, were completed showing an improvement in scores from pre- to post-assessment. Concussion education for parents is an important tool that may lead to earlier recognition and better outcomes for student athletes with concussion. Providing this education from May through December may lead to greater uptake of the educational program. Parents may be more inclined to participate when football and sports physicals are top of mind.
