Alyson Nāpua Barrows was born in Honolulu in 1955. She remembers the abundance of ocean life alive in the moku of Kona, Oʻahu. Nāpua has fond memories as a child playing with limu, gathering it, and eating it with her mother. Eventually, Barrows recognized the value of growing limu along the seashore and collaborated with other gatherers to offer the same experiences to the younger generations. Moving to Maui after marrying her husband, Dennis, she launched the Waiheʻe Limu Restoration, LLC, in 2004 and continues to lead initiatives to protect, conserve, and replant limu on coastlines.
