Abstract

The primary purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic study of Melville's use of fire imagery in Moby Dlck. with some indication of earlier and later developments in his use of such imagery in order to present a broader context for its interpretation and appreciation. Such a study inevitably becomes a study as well of Melville's development as a writer.
