Abstract

The presence of L-α hydroxy acid oxidase in microbodies of the rat kidney has been shown through the use of differential and density equilibrium centrifugation (1). In addition, this enzyme has also been shown to be present in the ciliated protozoan, Tetrahymena pyriformis (22). In recent studies, the above enzyme has been identified and appears to be similar to or identical with the photorespiratory enzyme in green plants, glycolic acid oxidase (28), but the ambiguity of its identity with this plant enzyme still lingers on. Characterization of this enzyme, L-α hydroxy acid oxidase, has not been carried out. Thus, I plan to isolate it from the human liver, prepare antibodies, and determine its activity which as a consequence, aid in the characterization of this enzyme.
