Abstract

The production of band c quarks in QCD jets from pp collisions at √s=1.8 TeV is investigated using decays to muons and hadronic debris. The results are based on data collected at the DØ experiment during the 1992-1993 FermiLab collider run. Two jet events are investigated and the rate for bb̄ and cc̄ from gluon splitting is compared with analytic estimates based on perturbative QCD to O(α3³). Reasonable agreement is observed. The characteristics of gluon splitting to bb̄ and cc̄ followed by quark decay to a muon are interpreted statistically based on the HERWIG Monte Carlo.
