Genre: adat. Title: Pu mori: nggole kéli (python). Pitu Sopune recorded lakimosa (priest-leader) Ngaji at a hut outside of the village, at a place where ceremonial offerings are made, Nggoko angi, Kéli domain, 26 March 2023. Ngaji talks about local beliefs concerning animals, how the ancestors use them to communicate messages to the people (all while chewing betel quid). In this recording, he talks about the python, nggole kéli. The python is a special animal on Palu'e, which should be treated with respect, and it should not be killed because it is a vehicle of the ancestors. The pythons tend to live in the hills of the mountain, but sometimes they descend to the plantations and the villages, more often in the late rain season, or in the early spring, the planting season in March. In the first translated section, Ngaji talks about one of his four close encounters with the python. On way to Woja, across the island, passing the land of the Woto in the hills, he found a python lying in a large sapa basket by a plantation. So, he threw ceremonial rice kernels at it and uttered a bhulu wa'o prayer to the ancestors, Hina hama Pu mori, so that the python would return to the hills, which it instantly did. Pitu also asks Ngaji about the fact that many people wrong handle the python, they even kill it. Ngaji gives a couple of examples of when this act had dire consequences. Once in the village, a voice appeared (without body) outside of the killer's house. His wife was in a late stage of pregnancy, and the child was born with four (types of) scars. Another person soon fell dead after having killed a python. Ngaji utters the ritual speech used to communicate with the python, several times, in this recording. At the same occasion, several other animals were covered in separate recordings (see other items with lakimosa Ngaji in the SD1-340- row). The recordings were done directly to the HN1 stereo audio recorder. The recording and the annotation work was supported by a Firebird Foundation Supplemental Research Grant for the Documentation of Oral Literature and Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
