Abstract

Description

Genre: Medicine/huru. Mina Bai, a grandmother from kampung and domain Cu'a, tells about her 'huru watu' (huru stone) and, first, how she came to inherit the knowledge ('daju'). Beginning with Sundu Pa'ene (a man who mastered ritual language, Pa'e), then it was passed on to Kare (man's name), to another Kare who passed on the knowledge to Mina Bai. See also her 'huru ci'i, that is fully translated, and 'huru wa merene'. This is a curse; a stone is hung in he fruit tree, coconut or banana or manggo, and she utters a kind of curse, saying that if someone steals that person will get afflicted with 'huru watu', and the person must come to her for the cure. Symptoms: ache around hips/lower back. Cure: The cure uses a masticated mixture of betel-pepper, areca-nut, lime, tobacco and a crushed stone (powder), which is then applied to the lower back/spine, by way of 'ngiru'). The patient must 'peju' (pay), Mina doesn't. If not, the disease won't disappear. Recorded 6 June -16 by Pidhu Sophune using the AT2020 microphone. With Mama Toji.
