Abstract
Description
The Indo-Pacific is at a pivotal moment where ancient patterns of power politics collide with modern complexities of economic interdependence. As China rises and American power evolves, Southeast Asians engage in an intricate diplomatic dance that reveals both enduring truths about international relations and novel challenges of the present age. This shift has led many regional states to adopt more accommodating stances toward Beijing's growing presence.
The US-Australia alliance, a cornerstone of regional order since World War II, must now adapt its "supply" to meet the diverse "demands" of Southeast Asian partners without triggering the Chinese reactions these countries fear most. This delicate balancing act, playing out across multiple domains and through various institutional frameworks, will largely determine the future of Asian order.
