Lily Anne Leolani (Deniz) Souza was born on September 7th, 1958 in Kealakekua and raised in Keʻei. She graduated from Konawaena School and eventually pursued a degree in early education. Souza spent several years working at Kaloko Honokōhau for the National Park Service and was also a volunteer at Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau while she was in high school. She has been involved with many volunteer projects including, plantings at Puʻuwaʻawaʻa, restoration work at Kaloko-Honokōhau fish pond, and various projects in Kīholo. Among her many impressive initiatives, Lily Anne, with help from local community members, successfully organized the gathering of 167 tons of coral from Kailua to Kawaihae near the highway and returned it to the ocean. Later in life, she also worked as a mail carrier.
