The official ideology of the Communist Party of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is dialectical materialism. This world view, although subject to many serious criticisms in regard to verification of its contentions and inner consistency, must be regarded as one of the major philosophies of our century. Its usefulness in life and ability to provide a purposeful existence for many of its adherents makes dialectical materialism one of the most attractive theories tor practical living. It may be said that neither philosophy, nor science, nor religion has provided man with a rational and irrefutable explanation of the nature of man or the good life. This may or may not be possible. In any event we can appreciate the explanations given to these questions by dialectical materialists. Even if dialectical materialism is not absolutely true, it is believed by thousands of people as being so. In attempting to understand the painting theory of the Soviet Union we must therefore appreciate the philosophical basis on which this theory is founded. This is necessary for an understanding of Soviet painting theory. Furthermore, since dialectical materialism is a human construct like any other theory, we cannot expect this philosophy to be adhered to without modification in practice. I have attempted to evaluate the history of Soviet painting theory from four standpoints: (1) as an extension of the basic precepts of dialectical materialism, (2) as formulated· by Soviet artists, 3} as an expression of the Russian people, and (4) as an extension of politics.
