dc.description This item includes a segment of an instructor interview in a Writing Intensive course in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The interview was conducted in 2014, and in this clip the interviewee is responding to the question 'Why do you think it is important that students in your classes engage with our place(s) through writing?'
dc.description.abstract Brief excerpt from interview: They are able to understand the issues and then can contextualize them . . . also helps them engage with the writing, so they're not just doing the writing for the sake of writing . . . Especially if it's the neighborhood they belong to, and they feel passionately about the place, it helps with the writing process—they go out and seek more information . . . haven't taught something that is non-place-based.
