Abstract
Recently, there has been a great interest in the blue phases of cholesteric liquid crystal systems. To date, studies have mainly sought to determine the structures and properties of the blue phases. The blue phases are phases which exist over a small temperature range of about 1 C, between the cholesteric and isotropic phases. There are in fact three distinct blue phases, blue phase I (BPI), blue phase II (BPII), and blue phase III (BPIII or fog phase) in order of increasing temperature, that are known to exist. Light scattering studies have shown that BPI and BPII exhibit symmetry while BPIII (fog phase) in amorphous.
