Abstract
This research paper is an attempt to deal with G.K. Chesterton’s Father Brown stories in light of his other interests. It is my contention that the Father Brown stories served as much as a mouthpiece for Chesterton as they did a generator of revenues. They reflect his orthodox Roman Catholicism, more specifically his violent reaction to Modernity. I have divided the paper into three distinct parts. Part one supplies some general biographical information on Chesterton’s life. I dealt a little more thoroughly with influences that I feel are particularly relevant to the Father Brown pieces, namely a socio-economic model called Distributism and the Catholic Modernist crisis. Part two is my actual analysis of the Father Brown stories. It begins with a discussion of a form of insanity once known as monomania. The section following it handles the Brown stories. It is divided roughly into three sub-sections, each dealing with a particular type of criminal: capitalists, atheists/naturalists/materialists, and supernaturalists. The final section is a brief attempt to link the Father Brown stories to popular culture and to make a case for Chersterton as a popularize.
