Description
Hōkūokalani Akiu grew up in Kalihi in a blue-collar family. After graduating from Kaimukī High School he joined the U.S. military. When he returned home, he joined the workforce and went to college. He worked in the prisons and later in security at the University of Hawaiʻi. He is the former co-chair of the Commission on LGBTQ+ Equality in the University of Hawaiʻi system. He was a member of many groups, including Ka Lāhui Hawaiʻi, the LGBT Center, and Nā Mamo o Hawaiʻi. He lives with his husband in Pālolo Valley.
