Abstract

Brief excerpt from interview: I've never interviewed anybody before so part of the project was to go out into our community and search for someone with either Native Hawaiian background or Guam or Micronesian background so that we could explore their culture. I've never interviewed before so I didn't quite know exactly what questions to ask. I had to be culturally sensitive but also finish my project and get the answers I needed . . . . I found that I had to make relationships before I could do the interview. It was: meet people and then kind of establish a relationship before I could get the questions asked. There were questions that our instructor had suggested that we could start off with and that helped . . . I wanted to make my paper cohesive and so I asked my questions and then in order to have my paper flow nicely I realized that there were questions that I had forgotten to ask or needed to ask and so I had to go back and interview again, which, because I had established a relationship, was possible."
