dc.description Kathleen Leilehua Marciel Shimizu was born in Hilo, Hawaiʻi on June 23, 1955 to parents Eleanor Branco and David Marciel. Kathy is the eldest of two siblings and comes from a ranching family. She recalls memories of training to herd cattle from her grandpa and grandma Branco, learning castration and branding, and having a freezer full of meat. Kathy is a Hilo Viking Alum and later moved onto majoring in Animal Science at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. She shares these same childhood experiences with her cousin, Davianna McGregor and later worked in Ethnic Studies department doing oral history interviews. Kathy accepted a position on the Experiment Station in Waialeʻe through the University of Hawaiʻi. She shares her time on the farm as a female worker, the experiments being conducted, and moving up the ranks from cattle, poultry, and piggery. She explains the ins and outs of a typical day on the farm and shares stories of the working families on the station she’s met along the way. Kathy worked on the farm for six years, it’s where met her husband Paul and they later started their family. Kathy returned to school to get a teaching degree and began teaching elementary education on the north shore. She shares with us ongoing issues facing Waialeʻe today, her hopes for the future, memories from her childhood in Waialeʻe, and her work on the farm. Kathy is currently retired and is actively working to preserve Waialeʻe for the abundant and rich place she’s always known it to be.
