Abstract
he stability of a soap film can be seen as an equilibrium between the coulombic repulsive forces of the ionic soap molecules, which form a monolayer on each face of the film, and the van der Waal1s attractive forces which tend to pull the film together. The coulombic forces are of the 1/r2 type while the van der Waal1s forces, which were first used as constants in a gas equation to show deviation from ideality, are of the 1/r6 typei Direct measurement of the van der Waal's force has been very difficult to carry through experimentally, but a novel approach, described below, has been found.
