Abstract

Description

Genre: Family history/healing. Title: Mbeo Pisane. Ware Tinane (Koane) tells fist of all about the life of his grandmother, Mbeo Pisane, a healer with supernatural abilities (only partly transcribed, scroll ahead for more). She was contemporaneous with Methi Liru (18xx-1974), the other famous healer from the domain of Keli who lived until the 70s (year of birth and death not noted yet, the latter is possible to find out). Her career as a supernatural healer began with a dream where people walked on a cotton thread, tied along the ritual centre ('dhubu'). Everybody fell except her. Later the dream became widely known and people came to her to be cured. She used 'hule mila', a large fine leaf often used in ritual, and often put herbs on it. In this recording, which is long, Ware mixes a lot with Indonesian. It takes him a while to get warm in his shoes, as he was not used to speak with onky Palu'enese, an influence from his long stays in Malaysia. After about ten minutes he is more fluent (see the transcript there). Ware also tells about when he went picking edible leaves near the mountain and they found a huge snake, a python. They chopped in pieces and left it under a sacred mango tree, encircled with stones. When they returned the next day it was gone; it had reassembled itself and left. Recorded in Ware's home, kampong Kaju keri, noon time 8 Oct 2015. Present were Pidu Sophune, Wora Ngange, SD (Cawa Lunda) and Dhoka Pele. Baso, an elder brother with a slight disability also came by, and there is a story about how he fell ill when Mbeo fell ill. He couldn't walk and there was no cure anywhere. Baso (Mbeo's husband) buried his legs in the soil every day and left him standing there until evening. Baso only became well, and able to walk again, soon after Mbeo passed away (as if there was a connection). Baso Ware's son and wife's mother were also present before and after recording. Recorded with an AT Lavelier microphone to the H4N Zoom, after an hour or two of talking and having some barbecues fly fish with a little arak. Photo with Pidu (ebbe).
