One of the requirements for graduation from high school in Hawaii is a minimum of one credit in mathematics. While the author was student teaching, many of her students were prone to question the mathematics requirement, especially when the were non -college bound students. To many of them, the rationale regarding the one credit mathematics require ment seemed vague. Many students failed to see the relevance of taking mathematics in high school, for they could not see its applicability to their life after high school graduation.
